Abstract
The initial assessment of a patient’s pain is fundamental to establish a clinical diagnosis, as well as to monitor treatment response. The assessment must be as thorough as possible, and a systematic approach is recommended. Pain measurement tools are important adjuncts to a focused history and physical examination. Special considerations must also be made for young children, elderly patients, and patients with communication barriers. Post-procedural evaluation should be conducted in a manner that allows an accurate measure of procedural efficacy for the patient in a time efficient manner.
