Abstract
This chapter critically examines the role of higher education as both a product of and possible solution to structured differences in life opportunity. It includes vignettes and case studies of new traditional students who navigate universities. In some cases, these students meet challenges that impede their progress, and in others, they are met with support that allows them to harness personal power to graduate. The authors envision a perfect world where our colleges and universities make it easy—not hard—for marginalized students. This chapter also addresses issues in our colleges now and how we can better support students. There is a focus on campus initiatives to address student basic needs, which offers opportunities to situate the work of higher education within a broader framework of equity and justice. We give specific attention to the transformative possibilities of university and community partnerships, including promotion of values of equity, inclusion, collaboration, shared purpose, transparency, trust, and participatory action.
