Disrupting Dominant Discourses and Celebrating Counternarratives: Sustaining Success for Doctoral Students and Supervisors

Deconstructing Doctoral Discourses

Abstract

This chapter introduces this edited volume by presenting a scholarly overview of both the dominant discourses and the resistant counternarratives framing contemporary doctoral study and supervision, gleaned from selected scholarly literature. These dominant discourses generally individualise doctoral students and supervisors alike, thereby isolating them from broader networks of power and influence, and also eliding their agency and autonomy. By contrast, the counternarratives elicited in the chapter share a commitment to apprehending doctoral students and supervisors as knowledgeable and powerful scholars, thereby enhancing their agency and autonomy in purposeful interactions with multiple others. Such counternarratives are crucial for doctoral students and supervisors to experience sustained and sustainable success, facilitated by their separate and shared stories and strategies, in their research endeavours.
