Abstract

Short, cationic, amphipathic peptides are found as natural antimicrobial agents among all life forms. These natural peptides and their synthetic analogs, collectively named host defense peptides, have been extensively studied for their use as antimicrobial drugs. In the treatment of biofilm infections, host defense peptides can orchestrate a multifront attack, taking advantage of their antimicrobial, immunomodulatory, and antibiofilm activities. In this chapter, we will discuss the different activities that host defense peptides present and their potential in the treatment of biofilms infections. We focus primarily on the underlying molecular mechanisms of action and target pathways of these peptides, since understanding their action at a molecular level is becoming increasingly important to facilitate the design and development of improved peptides. We present biofilm-specific mechanisms and direct antimicrobial and immunomodulatory mechanisms that are relevant to the treatment of biofilm infections.
