Abstract

Biofilm is the ancient way of life for bacteria. A biofilm is a group of bacteria which have clumped together in a dense colony surrounded by a self-produced matrix. This form of life has proven to be particularly advantageous for bacteria by enabling them to live in a favorable and stable environment while protecting them from external threats. The biofilm mode of growth protects bacteria against anti-microbial agents, such as antibiotics, by increasing their tolerance. Additionally, a biofilm will enable pathogenic bacteria to repel the host’s immune system by resisting phagocytosis and attacks with anti-microbial substances, such as reactive oxygen and nitrogen species. This ability to withstand the immune response and antibiotic treatment means that infections of bacteria living in biofilms are complicated to overcome. As clinicians, biologists and engineers become more aware of the biofilm mode of growth for bacteria, the amount of research dedicated to eradicating them has increased significantly.
