Supporting Production Management in the Fourth Industrial Revolution: A Framework Based on Shop-Floor Data

Human-Automation Interaction

Abstract

Industry 4.0 can promote connectivity across the entire shop floor. In this process, information systems will be the lever, since they are able to bring together the data collection function and its treatment, giving it value. In the current digital transformation of the way of working, it is essential to design systems that consistently cover organizational processes, with a view to facilitate the decision making of production managers. The entire system should be based on the reality of the shop floor and its entire productive environment. In this way, this chapter intends to propose an information system framework in line with the manufacturing floor 4.0, focusing on the Manufacturing Execution System (MES). This system comprises four subsystems that place human resources at the core of the production management, supporting better decisions, and establishing a way to create, share and store knowledge, increasing the organizational knowledge. A specification of a MES software for a SME, considering the developed framework, is also presented allowing to obtain a consistent first base of software and procedures for the Smart Monitoring phase in the company.
