Abstract

Paraproteinemia is characterized by the overproduction of an immunoglobulin by clonal expansion of cells from the B cells lineage which includes the plasma cells. Recent advances have been introduced in the diagnostic investigations, risk stratifications, and management of many members of this group of illnesses, significantly improving the outcomes for many patients. This paved the way to progress in precision medicine and promoted the tendency towards standardization and networking.

The phenomenon of paraproteinemia can be encountered in many diseases and disorders and even in apparently healthy individuals. Our main concern was to group, classify, and characterize the conditions marked by this phenomenon in this textbook. This chapter describes the plan to achieve this objective using clear and precise terms and definitions.
