Core Techniques in Flap Reconstructive Microsurgery

Abstract

The medial plantar flap is a highly versatile flap that is commonly used to reconstruct defects in the foot and ankle. It enables like for like reconstruction with minimal effect on gait. It is typically based on the medial plantar artery and can be raised as either a sensate or non-sensate flap, depending on whether the medial plantar nerve is included. In this chapter we describe its anatomy along with common variations, and give a step-wise approach for raising the flap. Tips and common pitfalls are included to improve the likelihood of success.
