Abstract

Basal cell carcinomas (BCC) represent the majority of non-melanoma skin cancers and has increased in incidence. Most lesions arise on the sun-exposed head and neck and trunk. While it is considered an indolent process, BCC can be locally invasive. There are unique subtypes with distinctive clinical and histologic features. The majority of BCC lesions present early and treatment is based rather on risk factors for recurrence. Management options include surgical excision and radiation therapy. Superficial external beam radiation or surface brachytherapy may be employed. A variety of techniques are utilized to maximize dose delivery to a lesion while minimizing dose to normal tissues.
