Abstract
This chapter examines the role of society broadly defined in relation to democracy and democratization. It also considers the rise of alternative “Asian” conceptualizations and models of governance and their implications for democracy in practice. The three sections of analysis to be carried out in the main chapters of this volume are also introduced. These are, first, Confucianism, and Islam as communitarian challenges and implications for democracy. Second, the role of social movements. Third, socio-economic perspectives and distributive justice.
