Inflammatory, Reactive, and Infectious Conditions of the Breast

A Comprehensive Guide to Core Needle Biopsies of the Breast

Abstract

Inflammatory, reactive, and infectious conditions are relatively uncommon benign lesions found in core biopsies of the breast. In some instances, core biopsy of an inflammatory lesion is necessary to exclude a malignant process, as these lesions can sometimes simulate malignancy both clinically and on imaging.

This chapter will review the most common inflammatory and reactive processes that will be seen in a needle core breast biopsy. Pertinent clinical, radiographic, and histopathologic features of each lesion will be reviewed. The differential diagnoses will be discussed, which will include rare entities that should be kept in mind when interpreting biopsies of such lesions.
