Abstract
This chapter overviews the critical issues in tourism and sustainable development, emphasising the southern African context. The introduction discusses the relationship between tourism and sustainability and identifies the need for multiscale understanding in the changing localities. The chapter outlines the role of tourism in southern Africa and the conceptual foundation, including sustainable development goals (SDGs). This chapter introduces case studies in subsequent chapters, which share the common understanding that sustainable development’s key elements and principles should integrate into the tourism industry’s operations and relations with local communities and environments.
