Abstract
This introductory chapter focuses on the rising influence and importance of social media both within academic research and everyday contexts. The chapter reflects on this intersection with individual lives, providing the context for the primary focus on the edited collection on the meanings and impacts of social media within individual developmental trajectories. The key themes underpinning the edited collection are introduced, outlining the authored chapters comprising these. The chapters span intersectionality with social media at all stages of development, and the presentation of the purpose of the collection as a whole and organisation of the text is presented. The seven chapters that comprise the edited collection seek to explore the diversity of engagement with online platforms throughout the lifespan and draw on specific examples in exploring this.
