Abstract
Fusion of the first metatarsophalangeal (MTP1) is the gold standard treatment for advanced, symptomatic, and stiff hallux rigidus. No matter which technique is used (open, arthroscopic, or percutaneous), the main challenges of MTP1 fusion are preparing the bone surfaces and positioning the arthrodesis. Both are critical to the outcome. Preliminary studies of percutaneous MTP1 fusion have confirmed the reliability of this technique, which has similar results to the other techniques. The advantages of the percutaneous technique are the patient’s fast recovery and the lower complication rate. This chapter will describe the surgical technique for percutaneous MTP1 fusion, along with recent modifications and improvements.
