Abstract

The impact of the social distancing measures enacted during the COVID-19 pandemic significantly stressed and forever changed businesses, schools, communities, healthcare systems, and individuals. One of the most devastating and unintended consequences was an acute exacerbation of the firearm violence epidemic already raging for decades in the United States. In the early phases of the pandemic, there was a record-breaking surge in the acquisition of firearms, especially by first-time buyers. This increase has been linked to higher overall rates of firearm-related trauma including accidental shootings, pediatric and teenage firearm injuries, and suicide by firearm. This chapter highlights trends of firearm injuries during the pandemic and provides suggestions to combat the unabated epidemic of firearm violence in the United States.
