Handbook of Anger, Aggression, and Violence

Abstract

Adolescent relationship abuse (ARA) is a major public health concern that can include a single form or a combination of physical violence, psychological abuse, sexual aggression, and stalking. The prevalence of ARA ranges between 10% and 50% depending on methodology and population studied. ARA carries a variety of detrimental social, behavioral, and health outcomes including a host of mental and physical health consequences, risky sexual behaviors, substance misuse, and subsequent intimate partner violence (IPV) in adulthood. Given the prevalence and short- and long-term consequences, the prevention of ARA is a priority. School- and community-based programs have been shown to be mildly effective in preventing ARA. In this chapter, we discuss the various forms of ARA, key predictors and consequences of ARA, and how ARA disproportionately affects underrepresented groups of adolescents. We also discuss current violence prevention programming and the importance of early intervention.
