Abstract
This chapter explores some of the most common intraoperative complications that may occur during management of anesthetics. Whether anticipated or unexpected, both surgical and anesthestic problems may cause acute instability of patients, which requires rapid recognition, diagnosis and treatment of a variety of issues. In this chapter, we will explore frequently encountered intraoperative problems and the steps necessary to create a differential diagnosis, as well as treatment plan for a myriad of intraoperative issues. In no way can a single chapter adequately describe all of the management strategies for intraoperative problems, nor can a variety of clinical scenarios be distilled into a single management strategy. However, a general overview of the most common issues will provide framework appropriate for the scope of this chapter. We will also discuss more rarely encountered, but highly morbid anesthetic problems and appropriate management strategies.
