Design for Vulnerable Communities

Abstract

With a length of about 8000 km, the Italian coast represents a dynamic ecosystem where both natural and anthropic processes interact modifying its morphological, biological and physical characteristics. Climate change and anthropic pressure undergo constant changes of the coastal territories, increasing its environmental and social vulnerability levels, forcing its population to live in a condition of uncertainty that can turn into a real economic and social discontent causing territorial depopulation. At the same time, these areas have seen the past 20 years increase the tourism sector with the risk of compromising the landscape and its ecological values. Through research by design methodology, the article promotes a sensitive approach to the coastal areas to design outdoor accommodations as an evolution of traditional camping using temporary and mobile architecture to avoid land consumption. From actual vulnerabilities, new design approaches combine the need to preserve and strengthen the existing landscape with the opportunity to reactivate the coastal territories in which tourism represents the leading economy.
