Abstract

A trainee’s report of social support and their perceived level of individual resilience are identified as protective factors in the prevention of burnout and mistreatment. However social support is poorly defined which leads to difficulty developing preventive strategies or interventions. After a brief introduction to the relevant literature and current state of our understanding of social support, individual and relational resilience, I provide a framework for understanding and assessing the health of relationships. This framework includes understanding individual and family life cycles, systems thinking, relational resilience, and dyadic coping. A self-report questionnaire can guide an exploration of a trainees current relationships, giving direction on how to create and maintain good relationships. De-identified case examples illustrate the process used by a family psychiatrist to clarify and assess relationship difficulties. Action items for maintaining healthy relationships and improving relationship resilience are included.
