Abstract
In this chapter, we recommend ways health professions programs can use an antiracist perspective to improve the selection and development of teaching materials. The objectives of this chapter are: (1) Present the current state of how race and racial inequities are presented in health professions textbooks, based on the literature and our experiences systematically evaluating depictions in nursing textbooks. (2) Suggest strategies for textbook editors and authors, professional organizations, university administrators, and faculty to improve teaching on race, racism, and racial inequities. (3) Describe how to incorporate evidence-based critical reflection into clinical and biomedical courses so that students move beyond racial disparities and social determinants of health awareness to antiracist practice preparedness.
