Abstract
The goal of this chapter is to pose certain questions regarding, and demonstrate the significance of, nonverbal communication in both formal and close relations of people in the same or different positions in the hierarchy of an organization. The significance of communication skills in this specific context arises from leadership coming into realization through communication between people. Through employing nonverbal aspects, the leader expands the meaning and contents of communication skills. In this chapter, we will examine existing knowledge on aspects of nonverbal communication in leadership. Furthermore, the author’s objective for this chapter is the creation of some kind of instrument for measuring the relations and positions of leaders in regard to the significance and “knowledge” of nonverbal communication in leading interaction. Some of the dimensions of nonverbal communication to be addressed in the psychological instrument are: How significant are nonverbal signals? How important are they in comparison to verbal symbols? What are the leaders’ attitudes on being knowledgeable of them? In elaborating the initial version of this instrument, some basic dimensions of nonverbal communication shall serve as a base, such as a look, a smile, the reaction of members in small (working) groups, proxemic aspects of nonverbal communication, and the intensifying and/or interrupting of communication, and so on.
