Abstract
Introduction: Manchester-Fothergill procedure (MP) is a surgery that restores normal support of the uterus without removing it. The aim of this study is to evaluate the clinical characteristics, effectiveness and complications of the surgical treatment of cervical elongation by this technique.
Materials and methods: A retrospective observational study was carried out including 45 women who underwent the Manchester operation in our hospital from 2006 to 2017. We did a revision of the evolution 3 years after the surgery.
Results: Mean age was 47.9 years, parity 1.9 births, and average body mass index 25.8 kg/m2. The average length of the surgery was 49 min. A month after the surgery (n = 45), we found 68.8% of patients had no complications and 31.1% had minor postoperative complications. At the 6-month check-up (n = 32), 84.3% of the patients were asymptomatic. At the annual check-up (n = 34), 91.2% were asymptomatic. From the second year, all patient were asymptomatic.
Interpretation of the results: Manchester operation is a safe and fast technique not requiring admission. There were only minor short- and long-term complications which were completely solved in all cases. No cases of cervical stenosis were observed.
Conclusions: Manchester procedure showed good results and few and minor complications. This technique should be considered and offered for the treatment of uterine prolapse in selected patients who wish to keep their uterus.
