Abstract
“Centaurea Cyanus Revival” is set in a distant dystopian future, on an Earth no longer hospitable to life. Young Aste lives in a subterranean human colony, which has survived the extinction. For generations the colony has been resigned to life underground, dependent on the cultivation of Arthrospira platensis—a green-blue algae, as a food and oxygen source. Aste marvels at the rich diversity of the former Earth, which they see in the historical videos that provide context for their educational studies: “Will there ever be a field of Zea Mays like this again?” Aste is summoned through an ancient technology, the plant spirit of Centaurea Cyanus, once known as the common cornflower, to contribute to the re-animation of life on Earth. Aste makes the decision to yield their being for the becoming of others.
