Abstract
The complexity of the United States health system continues to grow and can be characterized by more to know, do, manage, and watch for more people than at any point in history. With the increasing amount of medical data available, both from patients and the system, informatics is poised to play a central role in many aspects of the care delivery system. Better coordination of population health and health outcomes has been challenging but more promising than ever. Clinical informatics is instrumental in helping to improve quality, increase access, and reduce cost while considering the ever-increasing task burden on all of our providers. This chapter sets the foundation for understanding the importance of clinical information and the flow of information within the various domains of the health system and between these health system domains.
