Abstract

Leadership skills are critical for clinical informaticists to understand and apply when in positions like Chief Medical Informatics Officer, informatics director, or team leader. This chapter lays the groundwork for understanding the basic tenets of leadership and provides knowledge about leadership dimensions, styles, and models and differentiating between leadership and management. We then build on those by adding such leadership skills as IT/Health IT governance; negotiation; conflict management; organizational culture and how to survive in it; motivational strategies; assessing both the effectiveness of training and the development of critical skill and knowledge competencies; the differences between and the appropriate application of strategic, tactical, analytic/critical and innovative/creative thinking; decision making; and communication as a leadership cornerstone. We finally discuss some emerging trends in leadership and leadership theory. By the end of this chapter, you should have an excellent handle on the theory and practical application of some of the essential leadership principles to address the Informatics Board Exam and apply as a reference when needed to be the best leader you can be.
