Abstract
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common sleep disorder in which there is complete or partial obstruction of the upper airway during sleep. Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) has been established as being the primary treatment for OSA; however, patients may encounter adaptation issues. Healthcare professionals (HCPs) play an important role in facilitating the patient’s adaptation to the therapy. Using various methods when interacting with the patient, the HCP can positively influence CPAP adherence. Methods used by the HCP such as ensuring proper education at the initiation of therapy, discussing and understanding the psychosocial aspects of the patient’s situation, goals of therapy, spousal support, and motivation to continue with CPAP when encountering difficulties will be explored.
