Abstract

Osteoporosis is a painless disorder unless there is a fracture associated with it. It is the result of an imbalance between bone production and bone resorption in favor of resorption. Osteoporotic bones are brittle, subject to fracture even with the smallest of trauma. Fracture resulted in significant pain and disability, so prevention of fracture is the objective of the treatment of osteoporosis. Symptom-free osteoporosis is treated medically. Most fractures, in particular spine, could be managed conservatively but may require bone augmentation. In the case of peripheral fractures, orthopedic surgery for stabilization or joint replacement may be necessary. In this chapter, we cover osteoporosis and procedural management of wedge compression fracture.
