Abstract

The paper reports the author's experimental research on Mach reflection of shock waves, performed at the Department of Fuid Mechanics, Institute of Fundamental Technological Research, Polish Academy of Sciences. The idea was originated by the famous paper of Professor Sakurai (Sakurai in J Phys Soc Japan 19:1440–1450, 1964). Then, from Guderley (Guderley KG (1957) Theorie schallnaher stroemungen. Springer, Berlin, Goettingen, Heidelberg) came the suggestion to investigate the problem under rarefied flow conditions. Guderley expected appearance of a rarefaction wave in a very small area behind the triple point. In the rarefied gas, in which the mean free path of the molecules and thickness of the shocks are large, such rarefaction wave should also be large enough to be visible. Looking for this wave, although unsuccessful, led to finding some other interesting phenomena.
