Abstract
This chapter takes Riley’s chapter in the first edition as a reference point to locate what has changed and what remained the same over the past decade, but extends the scope to include Canada alongside the US. As might be expected across this vast territory, the tensions between the functions of higher education (HE) in respect of professional practice and “academic” research have been overcome in different ways. Quebec proves most enduring in respect of “Research Creation,” whilst the bridges built elsewhere between professional artists and the academy are proving less accessible over time. The chapter offers a sketch overview of advances in Practice as Research (PaR) whilst indicating the nuances of the various micro-cultures.
