Abstract
Purpose The main purpose of this article is to develop the ambiguity of the interpretation of regional reproduction within the framework of the structural-content and regional-target aspects as a general theoretical position, concretized by the example of Russia. Design/Methodology The functioning and development of regions are interpreted by the authors as a process of interrelation of regions with the national economy, which essentially ensures economic equilibrium in the country. A logical-practical chain of “political economy–institutional economics–management of the national economy” is established, which serves as a way to combine theory with practice. Conclusions The region is “revealed” by the authors from the structural-content and functional-target sides. Reproduction is interpreted by the authors as the interconnection of stages, and includes additional stages—“science” (scientific service) and “utilization stage”. The scheme “nature–productive forces–economic base–superstructure” is supplemented by the authors of one more component—“economic management”. At the same time, settlements and the population are taken into account, which is an important point in the spatial interpretation of the economy (including the regional-spatial interpretation). Originality/Value The authors have developed a methodology for studying social reproduction with a distinction between national and regional sides. From these positions, the structural and content side of the region (regions) are revealed and without which its almost impossible to manage the national economy (and here the functional and target side is described). The authors show the interaction of parts of the economic space and develop issues of cluster-like formations and cluster interactions and also represent the territory as an economic resource, and the economy—as a regional-spatial one.
