Abstract

Chromium is a strategic/critical metal for Russian Federation, but two-thirds of needs are met by imports, so discovering of new deposits of chromite, including unconventional placer deposits, are of commercial and scientific interest. The chromite placer concentrations of the eastern part of East-European platform, which has commercial and potential significance, have been established in the Nizhny Novgorod region (Lukoyanov placer cluster of Middle Jurassic) and south-western Bashkiria (Sabantuy occurrence of Permian System).

Field lithological and facial research reveals coastal-marine genesis of the placer deposits. Typomorphic features of the chromites were studied by optical microscope, SEM and X-ray microprobe analyses. It indicates that they have close relationship with the chrome-spinel of ophiolite associations. The assumed overthrust structure of chromite-bearing hyperbasites of the Urals suggests a wide distribution of chromite-bearing sands within the Upper Permian - Jurassic paleobassin of Volga-Ural region, in which high grade of chromites was controlled by hydro- and lithodynamic conditions favorable for placer formation.

Primary sources of the chromite placer occurrences and mineral potential of the eastern part of the East European Platform are discussed.
