Abstract
This chapter argues the case that Psychoanalysis as a discipline has conceptual links with the utopian genre, in that both the psychological practice and the cultural artifacts attempt to open up spaces for dreaming, for the construction of new narratives about the self, and for the opening of other ways of living. Both psychoanalysis and utopias, then, potentially activate new principles of hope. Utopias might be seen as forms of dreaming forward, working against repetition to fashion new worlds in a similar way to how psychoanalysis aims to disrupt the repetitive streams of the subject’s history. This form of counter thinking allows for growth, for forms of freedom that can liberate both the individual and the society.
