Abstract

Researchers have established that mental health conditions, particularly ADHD, anxiety, depression and obsessive-compulsive disorders, occur at high rates for persons diagnosed with ASD. A substantial research literature has developed on the topic and will be addressed in this chapter. What clinicians should look for, symptom presentation, and rates of comorbidity will be reviewed. In addition, appropriate assessment tools and strategies for common co-occurring disorders will be detailed. Existing evidence-based treatments will be reviewed. This chapter will also address challenges in diagnosing co-occurring conditions in this population.
