Abstract
Global climate change is increasingly recognized as a threat to low-lying coastal cities and is arguably causing a new wave of gentrification, termed climate gentrification. The proposition of climate gentrification asserts that this new form of gentrification may potentially be triggered by the prevalent concerns regarding the rising sea level and emerging coastal hazards, resulting in residential relocation to low-risk areas at higher elevations, thereby creating changes in the demographic and socioeconomic profile of neighborhoods. While climate gentrification has attracted some media and public attention, it has been subject to academic debate due to the lack of a firm theoretical foundation and empirical validation. Following a review of the evolutional history of gentrification, thus positing climate gentrification as a promising subject for urban researchers, this chapter aims to conceptualize a theoretical framework integrating social, environmental, and geographic sciences to explore the mechanisms underpinning the way in which climate gentrification may occur. We further compile a global scan of cities and areas that may be potentially subject to climate gentrification as reported in the literature and media, and identify the vulnerable population and places in different contexts. We conclude by encouraging a wider scope of scholars in sociology, politics, economy, urban planning, geography, as well as spatial and environmental sciences to explore how global environmental change affects human settlement and human adaptation behaviors, and to contribute methodological as well as empirical studies that enrich the theorization of climate gentrification.
