Abstract
The aim of this work is to understand the processes of generation and mobilization of scientific and applied knowledge in health services to solve the health problems of the population. The study analyzes the scientific and inventive capacities of the 13 National Institutes of Health (NIH) as creators and users of knowledge. The study is based on bibliometric indicators of scientific publications and patents since the NIH emerged until 2019, complemented with interviews and data from the health institutes themselves to identify two fundamental aspects of the innovative process: a) the existence of scientific and invention patterns related to prevalent diseases and potential uses and b) the importance of the scientific and inventive collaboration of each institute with other agents. Publications and inventions in health services reflect the knowledge that is embodied in treatments, drugs, medical devices and vaccines that are used to improve the health of the population. To analyze scientific productivity, the search for authors affiliated with the NIH was carried out, using the SCOPUS Index data base, accessed through the portal to the year 2019. The patent data comes from the European Patent Office. Based on this information, the performance patterns of the institutes are characterized by considering the type and intensity of scientific production and the inventiveness and degree of collaboration with other agents. Inventions are grouped according to their potential uses and by the prevalent diseases in Mexico.
