Abstract
The dyskinetic form of cerebral palsy is characterized by the presence of involuntary movements, muscle tone fluctuations and primitive reflexes. In this chapter, the clinical types of involuntary movements are presented: athetoid, choreic and dystonic movements which sometimes are present simultaneously.
The clinical evolution of dyskinesia in cerebral palsy is discussed, as well as the initial stage of the pathology, when the child is severely hypotonic and involuntary movements have not yet appeared. Specific manual techniques aimed at increasing muscle recruitment are also described to promote the antigravity postural control and stability.
The approach to treatment is outlined, distinguishing the peculiarities of the different hypotonic and dyskinetic phases and their specific problems which include emotional aspects, cognitive and communicative impairments and sensory perceptual deficits, which affect tolerance to environmental inputs. Practical suggestions are illustrated to guide parents and caregivers in the promotion of independence in daily life and the participation of the children and adolescents in social and educational activities.
