Abstract
This entry discusses the increased rates of cohabitation across the United States. Importantly, research shows that cohabiters experience increased rates of intimate partner violence, as compared to those in marriages. Scholars propose a lack of commitment within the relationship, the absence of institutionalized norms, and selection factors as reasons for the increased rates.
