Abstract
Percutaneous renal mass biopsy (RMB) is a diagnostic procedure that represents the only reliable way to differentiate benign from malignant tumours for renal lesions identified on imaging studies. Historically RMB has been underutilised by clinicians due to concerns regarding safety and accuracy, however numerous studies in the contemporary era have demonstrated RMB to be an effective technique for obtaining histological specimens to help clinicians and patients make fully informed treatment decisions. Incorporating routine use of RMB into diagnostic pathways can enable more patients to be managed with active surveillance, delayed intervention or avoid surgery for benign disease. Current techniques for RMB have a low complication rate, are cost-effective and do not complicate surgical intervention. We provide an overview of the current literature and advocate for routine use of RMB in the diagnosis of renal masses.
