Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Over 34 million US adults are estimated to have diabetes (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 2020 National diabetes statistics report. https://www.cdc.gov/diabetes/pdfs/data/statistics/national-diabetes-statistics-report.pdf. Accessed Nov 2020). Prevention, early detection, and a patient-tailored treatment program, combining lifestyle modifications and pharmacotherapy, are essential in controlling the diabetes epidemic.
