Handbook of Smart Materials, Technologies, and Devices

Abstract

Smart structures or, more generally, smart material systems, are understood to be engineering systems that integrate intelligent material to enhance performance in conventional models. In their more advanced principles, intelligent material systems have been designed in order to mimic the features of living organisms through the use of sensors to feel changes in environmental and/or organisational features and encourage corrective behaviour, through actuators, to maintain satisfactory system performance. A microprocessor programme is responsible for the signal interpretation and monitoring of the actuator, handling this mechanism. Here are the main features of some of the smart materials that are in trend. In addition, with the aid of several appropriate bibliographical references, a review of similar studies and functional applications demonstrates the capacity to resolve practical engineering issues. Detailed explanations and reviews of these materials are provided.
