Abstract

Mesenteric ischemia encompasses arterial and venous etiologies leading to diminished blood flow to the small and/or large bowel. Acute mesenteric ischemia has an extremely high morbidity and mortality with early diagnosis being critical to patient survival. Chronic mesenteric ischemia on the other hand is a more insidious process, usually associated with overall poor cardiovascular health. This chapter will highlight the important etiologies, clinical presentation, anatomic considerations, and treatment options of the various etiologies of acute and chronic mesenteric ischemia.
