Intersectionalities and Old Age: Ageism in the Crossroads of Race, Gender, and Age

Racism and Human Development

Abstract

This chapter aims to expand the discussion and research based on ageism and the process of aging considering the global stage in which, in the last decades, institutionalization appears as a priority tool for the issue of dealing with the longevity of the population. Through the analytical lens of intersectionality, we aim to discuss how the processes of aging are crossed by social markers of race, gender, and age, as well as consider the threats and violations felt by this public regarding their body and sexuality. We conclude that understanding ageism through the understanding of oppression systems such as sexism and racism contributes to constructing shared agings, which brings the emerging need to change the perspective that confining and excluding this population are the only possibilities, making us think of new ways to provide care through intersectional ethics.
