Abstract

The indications for surgical stabilization of rib fractures and flail chest are historically controversial and the ideal treatment of these injuries is unknown, but recent randomized controlled trials and systematic reviews have revealed evidence of less morbidity with surgical fixation of the chest wall. Based on the available evidence, we discuss the outcomes impacted by surgery and propose indications and timing for fixation in flail chest and multiple rib fractures.
