Abstract
Stroke is a major and serious event among patients affected by sickle cell disease (SCD), especially at a younger age, where it is a leading cause of death and disability. Due to its potentially reversible pathophysiological mechanisms, prevention by early recognition as well as screening tools is essential for those affected by this disease. In this chapter, we discuss different approaches and strategies for the early detection among patients at risk of stroke, with special focus on the development of transcranial Doppler ultrasound (TCD/TCCS) as a reliable, easy-to-use, cost-effective tool and its dramatic effects in lowering stroke-related mortality and burden of disease.
