Abstract
This chapter describes the detailed steps for managing rectal prolapse and pelvic organ descent through an abdominal approach (as opposed to a perineal repair). The individual selection and type of approach (open versus minimally invasive, extent of mobilization, type of fixation) may vary depending on the specifics of the pathology, previous surgical repairs, functional aspects, as well as surgeon preference. The presence of underlying risk constellations (e.g., immunosuppression, cachexia, need for bowel resection, etc.) may affect the pre- and intraoperative decision-making. Indications, pitfalls and danger points, preoperative preparation, and postoperative complications are discussed.
