Abstract
This chapter surveys the theoretic formations of ‘diasporic’ and ‘transnational’, connecting them to processes of globalization and histories of colonialism. It emphasizes the multiform, virtual and interactive nature of transnational spaces by contrast with the nostalgia of home and away in colonial and diasporic migrant experience, pointing up elements in the transnational of intra- as well as inter-national dynamics. It follows Lefebvre’s idea of the production of space, noting its temporal as well as geographic and socio-political aspects and positions the India-Australian exchanges featured in this collection in relation to much other work carried out under a transnational rubric.
