Abstract

After describing how roles for families of students with disabilities have changed over the last 75 years, this chapter describes the contemporary Sunshine Model of Trusting Family-Professional Partnerships. The Sunshine Model includes five dimensions (i.e., equity, respect, communication, advocacy, and commitment) and seven opportunities for partnerships (i.e., academics, social and emotional learning, behavior, assessments, special meetings, transitions, and school capacity enhancement). The partners include families and professionals of students with and without disabilities from prekindergarten through transition to adulthood. This chapter also discusses the utility of the Sunshine Model at the individual family level in schools, collective school levels, and settings outside of schools.
