Abstract
There is ample evidence that electronic health records (EHRs) stand to benefit both the healthcare providers and the patients in many ways. As a result, healthcare providers in offices, clinics, and hospitals all over the world are increasingly looking into leveraging the potentials provided by HER systems. Although there are increasing body of knowledge on EHR initiatives, anecdotal evidence reveals that a significant number of EHR initiatives do not survive post-experimentation phase. This has led us to examine why, despite EHRs potential to provide a range of benefits, EHR initiatives do not outlast post-experimentation phase. In this paper, we examine factors that influence a successful adaption and acceptance of EHRs. Unlike the exiting research that largely focus on the technical factors, we will consider the non-technical factors that impede the successful adaption and acceptance of EHRs in hospitals and clinics. We undertake extensive analysis of the literature to investigate research landscape focusing on non-technical factors that affect the acceptance of EHRs by the healthcare providers. Our results show that social, culture and behavioural are as important as the technical factors in successful HER implementation.
