The Allen Ginsberg ‘Case’ and Translation (in) History: How Czechoslovakia Elected and Then Expelled the King of May

Abstract

This chapter examines the events surrounding Allen Ginsberg’s visit to Czechoslovakia in 1965 and his subsequent expulsion. Based on an analysis of relevant historiography, available archival sources, and eye-witness accounts, the chapter discusses the ways in which translation contributed to the representation, canonization, defamation, and ultimately near legendary status of Ginsberg in Czechoslovakia. The Ginsberg episode also speaks volumes about the era of lackluster de-Stalinization in Czechoslovakia, when the younger generation no longer subscribed to the worldviews presented to them by the Communist party, and where there was tension in the cultural field and a desire for more artistic freedom and less regulations. By sheer historical coincidence, Allen Ginsberg stepped into this maze of tension, different convictions, and interests, and what followed became a complicated history and even the stuff of legend.
