Abstract
The diagnosis of brain death or death by neurological criteria is one of the most important topics in medicine. While the medical standards for the diagnosis are universally accepted, differences still exist regarding several other aspects of this diagnosis around the world. This impressive and unacceptable variation in practice claimed international scientific societies to promote a better uniformity on a concept which cannot differ depending on the country where the death occurred. In this chapter, the authors discuss the most recent literature on determination of brain death/death by neurologic criteria. The importance of education and training and the role of communication in this particular setting of intensive care are highlighted.
